Mitch Gray enters his 27th year as “The Voice of West Georgia Athletics”, and the Tallapoosa native has established himself as one of the top play-by-play men in the industry, as well as becoming a local radio icon.
The veteran began calling the action for UWG football in 1982; the same season that head coach Bobby Pate’s (then the West Georgia Braves) squad ran the table to win the Division III National Championship. Since then, he has not missed a game. In fact, when West Georgia visits Valdosta State on October 30, Gray will call his 300th football game in a row as the “Voice of the Wolves”. Gray also handles the play-by-play for UWG basketball and hosts “The Daryl Dickey Show” each Monday night.
In addition to his duties with the Network, Gray is the Sports Information Director for UWG, a post he has held since 1994. He also hosts “Mitch Gray In The Mornings”, a morning drive-time show which airs on B92-Country (92.1, WBTR), weekdays from 6-9am. And Friday nights would not be the same without Gray “telling the story” as the play-by-play voice of B92 Country’s High School Football Game of the Week.
Andy Micacchione returns for his 6th-straight season as Color-Analyst of West Georgia football, and his 15th-season overall as a member of the football radio broadcast crew. Micacchione was the first radio color-analyst in West Georgia football history, having served that capacity when UWG resurrected its football program in 1981.
Micacchione has dedicated most of his adult life to serving students in the local public school systems. Currently the principal at Haralson County Middle School, his career in education includes time spent as a teacher and a coach, with stops at Temple and Bowdon High Schools.
Micacchione played college baseball at Valdosta State University, helping lead the Blazers to the 1979 Division II National Championship. He, along with the rest of his teammates, have since been enshrined in the VSU Sports Hall of Fame.
Micacchione and his wife, Cindy, have a daughter , Erin , and a son , Joseph.
Aaron Sones is the Network’s Executive Director and Senior Executive Producer. A native of Picayune, Miss., Sones serves many roles for WGWSN both behind the scenes and behind the microphone. First and foremost, Sones’ responsibilities with the Network involve oversight of programming, broadcast formatting, marketing, promotions, advertising, and multi-media advancement. On game-day, he is the studio host for Wolves football broadcasts, which include a one-hour “Countdown To Kick-Off " pre-game show, halftime programming, and a postgame wrap-up show. He teams with Jack Douglas to co-host the “Wolves Gameday” tailgate show live from Grisham Stadium, which begins two hours prior to kickoff of all UWG home games.
Sones brings to WGWSN a strong and diverse background in the sports broadcasting arena, with a reputation for building sports radio programs from the ground-up. Prior to his arrival in Carrollton, he teamed with broadcasting veterans Max Howell and Scott McKinney for three years as co-host, Director of Affiliate Relations and Growth, Director of Public Relations, and eventually Executive Producer of “Southern Sports Tonight”, a popular regional daily sports-talk program with emphasis on southern college sports.
While a student at Mississippi State University, Sones developed a new pre-game tailgate show, “MSU Gameday”. That program now has expanded and can now be heard state-wide on fall Saturdays prior to MSU football games. He also worked in the MSU Athletics Media Relations Department, where he served important roles as an assistant for all sports, as well as fulfilling the position of Sports Information Director for men’s golf for one season. Sones also wrote feature stories for gameday athletics programs, was the public address announcer for Bulldogs baseball games, and announced area high school football games on Friday nights.
In addition to his duties for WGWSN, Sones is the play-by-play voice for Kiss 102.7’s High School Football Game of the Week .
